Beloved public!
On December 3, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Nîmes will host the first performance of TRICLINIUM, the new show of Ballet Cadagiani.
The triclinium is the reception hall of the Roman domus in ancient times. In 1883, a magnificent mosaic was discovered in the remains of a triclinium in ancient Nemausus. This mosaic, exhibited in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes, is the origin of the TRICLINIUM choreography. It is akin to a welcome ritual addressed to the mosaic to celebrate its return to the light, to the ground of living humanity.
This large mosaic (9 x 6 m) is called the « Wedding of Admetos » because at its center is depicted a mythological episode from Thessaly: the dramatic arrival of Admetos, king of Phere, at the court of Pelias, king of Iolkos. The latter had sworn to marry his daughter Alceste only with a man able to come to him by means of a chariot harnessed to a lion and a boar.. Thanks to the help of Apollo, Admetos succeeds in this miracle and is able to marry Alceste.
Five young dancers and four musicians will offer you a choreographic and musical memory of the three successive lives of the mosaic: first its trivial life as a floor covering of a dining room, then a very long secret life hidden underground for 1700 years, and finally now a sacred life as a museum object, a work of art and a precious relic, aimed for eternity at a living mythological episode. In this exceptional premiere, they will dance on the original mosaic.
I would like to thank the City of Nîmes, the Conseil départemental du Gard, the Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes for their financial and moral support, as well as all – and there are many – who have collaborated on this project, first and foremost Pascal Trarieux, curator of the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Nîmes, who has placed his trust in us since the beginning of this project.
We look forward to welcoming you to the refined setting of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes for a joyful and generous dance performance celebrating the return of the mosaic and its rich memory to the earth of the living.
